In the past few days, many people have posted comments to our SGSC website asking the same question: “I have forgotten the phone number that I used to apply for my SRD grant, what should I do?”. Rather than answer each one individually, thinking there are a lot of other people experiencing the same issue, I prepared a step-by-step guide to help you.
You will learn how to get your forgotten your phone number in this article, as well as the documents and questions you may ask you during the update process. If you do not have access to your old, forgotten phone number, I will guide you on how to change your number.

Documents Required
In order to begin the process of recovering a phone number, you will need the following documents:
- Document related to an ID card
- Number assigned to an application or reference
Your forgotten phone number retrieval process can begin once you obtain both of them.
Get Reference Number
You should find your reference number on the confirmation receipt you received during the application process if you applied in person in the SASSA office. Your application ID will be sent to you via your phone number and email if you applied online. The application is available there, so please obtain it there.
It is important not to confuse Application ID with Reference Number. Both refer to the same SASSA grant number. Your application is tracked by that unique number.
I have written a guide to help you find your lost application reference number in case you are unable to locate it.

Steps You Need to Follow
Your forgotten phone number can be recovered once you have your identity document and Application ID. Before giving you the phone number details, SASSA may also require biometric verification, so it is recommended that you visit the office in person.
You can also call the SASSA helpline if you prefer. If they require biometric verification, you can visit the office to complete the process.
- Find Office: Finding a office near you is the first step. Searching for “SASSA Office Near Me” on Google will help you find the nearest office. After finding the nearest office, call to confirm their opening hours. SASSA offices are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but the timing may vary from region to region.
- Gather Documents: Gather your SASSA application reference number and Identity document from your nearest SASSA office.
- Visit SASSA Office: The office is now open during regular business hours. Queues may be long outside the SASSA office, so you may have to wait in line.
- Request for Phone Number: Tell the SASSA representative when it is your turn that you are here to retrieve your forgotten phone number. Let them know if you have forgotten your grant application phone number.
- Verification Compilation: In order to verify your application, you will be asked to provide your ID card and application reference number. It may be necessary for you to provide biometric verification to prove your ownership of the grant.
- Get Old Number Detail: You will receive the phone number you used to apply for SASSA once the verification process is complete. Your new phone number can also be given to them if you don’t have access to that number.
It’s all done. It has been successful for you to get your phone number details and to change it to your new phone number.
